Former Egyptian presidential candidate Ahmed Tantawy has been found guilty of forging election documents and has been sentenced to pay a fine, according to four security and judiciary sources. Additionally, twenty-one members of his campaign have been sentenced to a one-year term with labor as part of a crackdown on activists under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Tantawy, who withdrew from the elections due to lack of signatures, has been charged with forgery and handed a suspended sentence of one year, along with a fine of 20,000 Egyptian pounds. He is also prohibited from running for president for the next five years. During the 2023 election campaign, Tantawy claimed that many family members and allies were arrested, although the Egyptian authorities have denied any violations and claim not to hold political prisoners. President Sisi has emphasized the importance of security and development in Egypt.
