Explosion near merchant vessel off coast of Yemen in Red Sea prompts concerns

An explosion occurred near a merchant vessel off Yemen’s port of Aden on Tuesday, reported by the UKMTO agency and British maritime security firm Ambrey. A Greek-owned bulk carrier, registered in the Marshall Islands, was targeted while transiting through the Maritime Security Transit Corridor. The vessel, carrying US coal, was sailing from the US to India. Both Ambrey and UKMTO confirmed that the vessel and crew are safe.

Following recent Houthi attacks, the Iran-aligned group claimed responsibility for firing missiles at two ships in the Red Sea, identifying the Marshall Islands-flagged Star Nasia as American. The Greek-owned Star Nasia, managed by Star Bulk Carrier, sustained damage from the explosion but the crew was unharmed, according to a Greek shipping ministry official. It remains unclear whether the explosion was caused by a sea mine or a rocket.
