Libyan Factions Convene in Cairo for Future Talks

The President of the Presidential Council, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and eastern Libya’s Khalifa Haftar met in Cairo to discuss a potential resolution to the conflict in Libya. Egypt supports the talks, and the UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily also backs the dialogue. The recent talks build on discussions from the past year, and the sides agreed to support a balanced Libyan-Libyan solution and hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. The meeting in Cairo also addressed the reconstruction of Derna after recent floods. The region has been divided since Qadaffi’s fall in 2011, and countries in the region are striving for reconciliation. Libya, like other countries in the region, is at a crossroads in terms of potential reconciliation.
