Iranian state media has claimed that more than 70 people were killed and 170 injured in two explosions near Kerman’s “Martyr’s Cemetery” on January 3. The explosions took place on the anniversary of the killing of Qasem Soleimani. There are indications of a planned attack, as the explosions happened on a road leading to the cemetery, and there are reports of bags exploding and bodies in the street. The Iranian Tasnim News stated that the perpetrators apparently detonated the bombs by remote control. Iran has a history of internal attacks by various groups, so the source of the explosions is not yet clear. The anniversary of Soleimani’s death has been marked by other violent events recently, including the killing of a Hamas deputy leader in Beirut and an Iranian IRGC officer in Syria.
