Relative of Mahsa Amini receives five-year prison sentence

Safa Aaeli, uncle of Mahsa Amini, sentenced to 5 years and 4 months in prison for supporting protests against the regime after Amini’s death in September 2022, according to Hengaw Organization for Human Rights. Aaeli charged with plotting against internal security, spreading propaganda against the regime, and insulting Iran’s supreme leader. Aaeli arrested from his home in September, shortly before the first anniversary of Amini’s killing. Amini arrested by “morality police” officers in Tehran in mid-September 2022 for incorrectly wearing her hijab, later dying in the hospital. Amini’s death sparked nationwide protests referred to as the “Women, Life, Liberty” protests, sweeping across Iran for months, declining in January 2023.
