UN Secretary-General Vows to Continue Push for Ceasefire in Gaza

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, spoke at the Doha Forum conference and emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. He expressed disappointment in the UN Security Council’s failure to agree on a ceasefire but stressed that it remains necessary. Guterres also urged leaders at the COP28 climate conference to make significant cuts to emissions and prevent global warming from surpassing 1.5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stated that Qatar will continue to pressure Israel and Hamas for a truce, despite slim chances. Additionally, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini called for a humanitarian ceasefire to end the crisis in Gaza. The United States and Israel oppose a ceasefire, believing it would only benefit Hamas. Oil producing powers also clashed with other countries at the climate summit over a possible agreement to phase out fossil fuels. Guterres called on fossil fuel companies to lead the renewables revolution.
